Wave of Violent Assaults in Iceland

Serious assaults have been common in Iceland in recent months. So far this year, three men have been submitted to the Landspítali national hospital’s ICU with severe head trauma and in two cases the patients’ conditions were critical.

Last weekend a group of people attacked a man in his forties. They are suspected of having repeatedly kicked his head while he was lying on the ground, Morgunbladid reports.

Two persons are in custody because of the assault and yesterday three other individuals were arrested because of it.

Criminologist Helgi Gunnarsson, who is a professor in social sciences at the University of Iceland, believes these assaults indicate a wave of violent crimes, which occurs once in a while.

However, he finds it necessary to review recent assault cases thoroughly to see whether they have anything in common; whether outside circumstances are an influence.
