A 67-year old German woman, Doris Kolberg, walked 60 km (37.2 miles) in 14 hours to seek help.
The car she and her husband were driving malfunctioned in the Icelandic outback two nights ago. This is reported in all the main media.
Kolberg was on a visit to Iceland with her husband Klaus. The couple was driving near Herdubreidarlindir, north Iceland, when their car became stuck in a river.
Water entered the engine so that the car stalled and they were unable to call for help, as there is no mobile phone service in the area.
Consequently Kolberg decided to set off on foot, walking for 14 hours until she reached the Ring Road (Highway 1) at 6 am. There she managed to flag down a vehicle driven by a farmer in the area.
In an interview on RÚV news yesterday evening, Kolberg was remarkably upbeat and claimed she was not at all tired from the walk, only a little stiff. She and her husband sailed for home with the ferry Norraena last night.
