Walk for peace

Icelandic pacifists have organized a peace walk with torches down Laugavegur, the main shopping street in Reykjavík, tonight, the day before Christmas.

The group will meet at central bus station Hlemmur and start walking down Laugavegur at 6 pm. The walk will begin with lighting torches at the bus station. People are encouraged to join the peace walk.

The Hamrahlídarkór choir and the choir of the Junior College in Hamrahlíd will perform and Falasteen Abu Libdeh from Palestine will address the group, led by actor Arnar Jónsson. The peace walk ends at Laekjatorg square with a song for peace.

This is the 27th annual peace walk on the day before Christmas in Reykjavík and has become a part of the city’s Christmas tradition, as explained in a press release issued by Icelandic pacifists this week.

Peace walks have also been organized at Akureyri, in northeast Iceland, and Ísafjördur, in the Westfjords, to take place tonight.
