Volcano Claims Award, Contraband Gets Poster

contraband-poster_empireVolcano (original title: Eldfjall) by Icelandic director Rúnar Rúnarsson received the main award in the category Meeting Point at the film festival Seminci in Valladolid, Spain, last weekend. The category is dedicated to directors’ debuts.

Meanwhile, a new poster for the English-language remake of Icelandic director Óskar Jónasson’s Reykjavík-Rotterdam, which is now known as Contraband, was published on the website of Empire on Tuesday, Morgunbladid reports.

The movie, directed by Baltasar Kormákur, who played the lead in the original version, is now starring Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster and Kate Beckinsale, among others, is set to premiere in the US on January 13, 2011, and in the UK on March 16.

In other culture news, Icelandic jazz players will perform in the Barbican Center during the London Jazz Festival on November 12: the Samúel Jón Samúelsson Big Band, Frelsissveit Nýja Íslands, Ómar Gudjónsson and band and Tríó Sunnu Gunnlaugs.
