Volcanic Plume Visible from Space

A satellite photo from NASA taken at noon yesterday shows the plume from the eruption in Holuhraun very clearly. The photo was published on the University of Iceland’s Institute of Earth Sciences’ Facebook page.

Toxic gases are being emitted from the eruption, which can be life-threatening. No one should approach the area without gas meters and gas masks. Winds conditions can change suddenly because of the thermal, making conditions very dangerous, mbl.is reports.

It is predicted that sulfur dioxide (SO2) levels will be high in the East Fjords north to Vopnafjörður today. Yesterday Fljótsdalur, Fljótsdalshérað, Jökuldalur and Vopnafjörður were affected the most. People who feel discomfort because of the pollution are advised to stay indoors, close all windows and turn off air conditioning.
