Volcanic Ash Cleaning in South Iceland This Weekend

Civil protection authorities in Vík, south Iceland, have decided to launch a cleaning initiative in the village this weekend. The municipality has been subject to heavy ash fall lately and the goal is to clean every home within its borders.

Volunteers are wanted. “We have already enjoyed a lot of help from volunteers for lambing and carpeting. Now we need help with cleaning, on Saturday and Sunday,” Gudmundur Ingi Ingason, director of the civil protection center in Vík, told mbl.is.

The goal is to begin on Saturday morning between 9 an 10 am. Those who are interested in helping out are asked to call 112 (the emergency hotline) and ask for contact with the Vík service center where they can register as volunteers.

According to mbl.is, the wind is expected to turn over the weekend and blow in from the north, which means that ash will be carried southwards, across the Eyjafjöll countryside and into the ocean. In that case, Keflavík International Airport could presumably reopen.
