The Icelandic Met Office has issued a strong gale warning (wind speeds in excess of 20 m/sec) for the northeastern part of the central highlands today, and a violent gale warning (20-28 m/sec) for all parts of the country tomorrow and heavy rain in the southeast.
To prevent flooding, the Met Office asks residents to check their drains to make sure they are not clogged before the rain sets in.
The forecast for today calls for southeasterly winds of 8-15 m/sec, but 13-20 m/sec in the northeast. About 3-10 m/sec in the southwest and west. Snow showers in most parts of the country today, but snow or sleet east of Öræfajökull glacier. Temperatures -5 to 0 ˚C (25-32˚ F), but around freezing point along the south coast.
Increasing southeasterly winds tomorrow morning, reaching 20-28 m/sec in the afternoon. Snow or sleet,and later rain and heavy rain in the southeastern part. Becoming warmer. Decreasing south and southwesterly winds tomorrow night with less rain, first in the southwest. Temperatures will range from 2 to 7˚C (36-45˚F).
