Almost 70 vintage cars arrived in the country yesterday to participate in a competition entitled “An Icelandic Odyssey” and race around Iceland. The youngest car in the race was made in 1981 and the oldest in 1922.
An Austin Mini Cooper, which participated in the Monte Carlo Rally in 1965, is registered for the “Icelandic Odyssey,” Fréttabladid reports.
The rally is organized by British car club HERO (Historic Endurance Rallying Organisation). It will take place between September 7 and 12 and is a mixture of competition and traveling.
Mayor of Reykjavík Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir will launch the race at the City Hall at 9 am on Sunday morning after which the drivers will head out to Thingvellir national park, Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir.
