Vilhjálmsson Remains Leader of Independents in City

Former Mayor of Reykjavík Vilhjálmur Th. Vilhjálmsson announced yesterday that he will continue to lead the Independence Party in Reykjavík City and remain a councilman despite criticism of his part in the REI-GGE merger.

Vilhjámsson further said “it remains open as to whom will become the next mayor” in March 2009. Originally, the Independence Party had planned that Vilhjálmsson would replace Ólafur F. Magnússon and become mayor again, Morgunbladid reports.

Vilhjálmsson said the decision will be made when the time approaches and that the Independence Party will make the decision on its own terms and without pressure from political opponents.

The Independence Party in Reykjavík City has issued a statement saying they support Vilhjálmsson, but Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir, Gísli Marteinn Baldursson and Júlíus Vífill Ingvarsson have also said that they are interested in becoming mayor.
