Today, archaeologists from the Cultural Heritage Agency of Iceland and a specialist in human bones came to Eldvatn lake, South Iceland, where a sword from the Viking Age was discovered last weekend, RÚV reports.
Uggi Ævarsson was one of the archaeologists involved. The sword is being examined and results from that examination are being awaited. To Uggi’s surprise, no traces of human activity were found at the site today.
“We arrived there, five archaeologists, looked at the site and did some digging by the lagoon at Eldvatn where the sword was discovered. We came to the conclusion, which surprised us, that there are no traces of human activity in the area; it simply doesn’t exist. There is, therefore, not much we can say.”
He continued, “This is a puzzle, because it’s highly unusual to find a sword lying in the sand, completely exposed (it was not covered by any sand) and then not to see any traces of human activity. That’s highly unusual.” Still, he said it is assumed that the sword dates back to the Viking Age.
