The Viking ship Vésteinn sank in Reykjavík harbor last night, but crews were able to get it back afloat shortly before midnight, RÚV reports. According to Ketill Berg Magnússon, owner of Reykjavik Viking Adventure, which operates the ship, there are no visible damages to it. It will undergo thorough examination today.
Heavy rain and high winds went through the capital area last night, causing waves to go over the floating dock, where the ship lay.
Ketill speculated, “and then we don’t know for sure for what reason, but probably the sump pump malfunctioned and stopped pumping sea water out, gradually making the surface of the sea water rise over the gunwales.”
The 12-meter-long (39-foot) ship, built in Þingeyri, the West Fjords, is used for transporting tourists during the summer.
