Vigdís Gets Honorary Degree from Sorbonne

Yesterday, former president of Iceland, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, was awarded an honorary degree from Paris-Sorbonne University, where she studied French and French literature 1949-1953, knuz.wordpress reports.

Former prime minister of Norway, Gro Harlem Brundtland, was awarded an honorary degree at the same time. They both spoke to a full house of students.

Vigdís spoke of the importance of discussion in our fight against poverty and in our effort to save the world. She said the study of languages is essential, as is the understanding of different cultures.

She spoke of the Women’s Day Off in Iceland in 1975, events leading up to it and its consequences. She pointed out that because Icelandic women let their voices be heard that day, she was able to run for president five years later and win.
