A viewing platform is currently being built by Ófærufoss, a two-cascade waterfall in Eldgjá canyon, an eruption fissure near Kirkjubæjarklaustur in the southern highlands within Vatnajökull National Park.
“[On Tuesday] we made the concrete foundation for the viewing platform by Ófærufoss, which no one can reach except flying birds—and of course people on foot—so we called for the assistance of a helicopter,” ranger Snorri Baldursson told ruv.is.
The concrete was moved by helicopter to the waterfall last weekend after it turned out when construction was set to begin earlier this summer that the rock wasn’t stable enough. The platform is scheduled to be completed by the end of the summer.
Forty km (24 miles) long, Eldgjá is massive, up to 200 meters (656 feet) deep and 600 meters wide. Eldgjá is believed to belong to the same volcanic system as Katla, as stated on south.is.
Tourists visit the waterfall in increasing numbers even though it takes some time to walk there from the Eldgjá parking place.
