An Icelandic family traveling in the West Fjords spotted an unusual creature near the bird cliff Látrabjarg yesterday.
“We were just walking past the cliff and looking down. Then all of a sudden we saw this huge creature in the sea below. We soon realized this wasn’t anything we’d ever seen before,” Sigurður H. Helgason told RÚV.
“He was just swimming by the cliff. He was chasing seals, you could tell. And they looked tiny in comparison. It was huge. A very majestic and great beast.”
Sigurður shared the video footage the family took of the walrus with RÚV, and it can be seen here.
Walruses are not native to Iceland but animals who have strayed from their usual course are occasionally spotted, most often along the northern coastline. In recent years a record number of stray walruses have wandered onto Icelandic beaches.
