The Icelandic Met Office issued a warning because of a thunderstorm that hit Iceland’s highland around Kjölur yesterday. Tourists in the area described it as the worst thunderstorm they’ve experienced—the weather phenomenon is highly unusual in Iceland.

A group of hikers traveling in the Kerlingarfjöll area told mbl.is that the air had become so electrified that their hair had stood on end.
Fortunately a foreigner, who was traveling with the Icelanders and was more used to thunder and lightning, advised them to go sit the storm out inside their cars.
On vedur.is, the Met Office’s website, one can see a map of where lightning has struck in the past days. Here is a link to a video of the thunderstorm in the highland.
