VIDEO: Saving a Town from Lava

Hótel Breiðdalsvík

In this installment of our visits to the eruption area, reporter Alína Mauer and photographer Art Bicnick provide a closer look at the efforts being made to protect the Reykjanes town of Grindavík from lava. A big part of this is the construction of earthen berms, which help keep the lava at bay.

As reported, there is limited reentry allowed into the town, although overnight stays are discouraged. Grindavík was evacuated just hours prior to last Wednesday’s eruption.
