Vice-chairman of the Social Democratic Alliance Ágúst Ólafur Ágústsson has announced his resignation as the party’s vice-chair and that he will not run as MP in the upcoming elections in spring.
In his announcement, Ágústsson explained that he had discussed the matter with chairwoman of the Social Democrats, outgoing Foreign Minister Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísaldóttir, last weekend, mbl.is reports.
Ágústsson said he and Gísladóttir had agreed to wait on announcing his resignation until it became clear whether the coalition between the Independence Party and the Social Democrats would remain intact. Their coaltion split yesterday.
Ágústsson explained that he had decided to resign because he and his wife want to study abroad, adding that he is not retiring from politics altogether. He will continue working for the Social Democrats and not leave his post as the party’s vice-chairman until its next general meeting.
