Vesturbæjarlaug swimming pool in Reykjavík will close from 26 May to 23 June for extensive repair work.
The facility must be emptied during construction, and safety concerns make it impossible to remain open during that time, according to director Anna Kristín Sigurðardóttir.
In addition to the main closure, work on the pool’s sauna facilities is ongoing, as reported by RÚV.
Demolition has been completed, and construction will resume in the coming days. As a result, the special changing cabin will close from 2 May until autumn, temporarily removing wheelchair access and facilities for trans guests. Outdoor changing cabins will remain open, accessible from the pool area, with lockers relocated to the lobby.
New sauna facilities will soon be introduced. These include an infrared sauna, two Finnish saunas, and a new relaxation area.
Anna Kristín has requested that any additional construction that might require the pool’s closure be scheduled during this period to avoid further disruption.
Other city pools will also close for maintenance this summer, though for shorter periods. Among there are: Breiðholtslaug, Árbæjarlaug, Grafarvogslaug, and Sundhöll Reykjavíkur.
