Very High Sea Level in Siglufjörður Harbor

The sea level in Siglufjörður, North Iceland, was so high last night that docks were inundated in places, RÚV reports. No damage is known to have resulted, but the outlook is for the sea level to rise to this level again at noon today.

The sea level is about 20 cm (8 in) higher than usual because of the moon’s proximity to Earth and because northerly winds bring ocean water into the fjord. You can view a video here, taken in the harbor just before midnight, last night:

Local authorities hope the sea water won’t get into the town’s drain system, since it would bring sand and more.
