Glacier guides in Vatnajökull National Park are preparing to welcome visitors back to the ice caves next month, as the winter season officially begins.

As reported by RÚV, 30 companies have been granted contracts to run tours, meeting strict requirements on safety standards and visitor care.

“These companies have to meet various conditions related to safety and the experience of visitors. So we are taking these issues seriously,” said Sigurjón Andrésson, chair of the park’s board.

The agreements also limit group sizes to between 8 and 16 guests per guide, depending on the trip. Officials say this helps to avoid queues inside the caves and ensures the experience remains enjoyable.

More than 200,000 people took part in glacier hikes and cave tours last year, making it one of the most popular tourist activities in the country.

The caves close each summer for safety reasons and reopen in early October, with conditions assessed daily by guides. Tour operators share information on risks with one another, and oversight is provided by the Nature Conservation Agency.

Ice cave tourism generates ISK 4–5 billion annually, and authorities are considering longer-term contracts to provide stability for operators.
