Vasectomies on the Rise in Iceland

More Icelandic men had vasectomies last year than ever before, RÚV reports, while elective sterilization procedures for women continue to decrease.

According to the Directorate of Health’s most recent newsletter, 638 individuals elected to have sterilization procedures last year. The vast majority of these—or 542—were for men, while the remaining 96 were for women. This is the fifth year in a row that the number of vasectomies performed has exceeded 500. Meanwhile, this is the first time since 2000, when statistics first started being kept on sterilization procedures in Iceland, that less than 100 women had such a procedure.

In 2000, 248 men had a vasectomy, followed by 251 men the following year. By contrast, 522 women had sterilization procedures in 2000.
