The Reykjavík-based sports club Valur won the Iceland handball cup for the first time in nine years yesterday after beating Haukar 33 to 31 on Haukar’s home court in Hafnarfjördur.
“This is a unique achievement […] and I knew how much they wanted to finish this here today [Sunday]. It would have been very sad had this not worked out,” Valur’s trainer Óskar Bjarni Óskarsson told Fréttabladid.
The team’s captain, Markús Máni Michaelsson, who also plays with the national team, scored ten goals.
After yesterday’s victory the champions drove back to Reykjavík in an open double-decker bus and threw a party in their home court in Laugardalshöll.
