Valur accepted transfer offers for Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson from Breiðablik and Víkingur, with the player ultimately reaching an agreement with Víkingur. The club stated that while they initially had no plans to sell him, his recent actions led to a breakdown of trust, forcing them to act.
Gylfi signs with Víkingur
As reported by the media this morning, Valur football club recently accepted two transfer offers for midfielder Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson from reigning Icelandic champions Breiðablik and league runners-up Víkingur.
According to sources cited by Vísir, Valur approved the bids from both clubs last night, granting Gylfi permission to negotiate personal terms. Valur club officials declined to comment on the matter when approached this morning.
As noted by Vísir, recent reports had suggested that Gylfi was looking for a transfer. While Valur had previously dismissed such rumours, it appeared that he had been granted his wish and was set to leave.
Just before noon today, Víkingur announced that Gylfi had reached an agreement with the club.
A difficult decision
Following the announcement, Valur released a statement, saying that the club recognised that this decision was controversial. The club initially had no plans to sell Gylfi this winter, given that he is “an exceptional player and character.” However, events took a turn last week when Gylfi and his representatives informed the club of his desire to leave the club. Following this announcement, Gylfi’s performance against ÍA forced Valur to act.
“Gylfi displayed significant disrespect towards both his teammates and the club with his performance while wearing the captain’s armband in our last match against ÍA. That was not the Gylfi we know. After discussions with players and others close to the squad, the board concluded that this behaviour had led to a breakdown of trust between the player and the team,” the announcement from Valur reads.
Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson, a former captain of Iceland’s national team, has played in the English Premier League, most notably with Tottenham Hotspur and Everton.
