The Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management has closed Valahnúkur cliff on Reykjanes peninsula to hikers, Víkurfréttir reports. The reason is that a large crevice has formed close to the cliff’s edge, likely to get larger. You can see a picture of it here. Walking close to the edge is dangerous, since part of the cliff is expected to collapse.
Travelers are asked to heed warning signs.
Valahnúkur is a popular tourist destination, situated close to Reykjanes lighthouse, at the southwest tip of the peninsula. The surf is strong in this area, and every year, rocks fall from the cliff into the ocean.
