USD 17.1 Million to Refurbish Navy Hangars in Iceland

Bidding information will be released today on the U.S. Navy’s planned refurbishing of navy hangars in Keflavík, Vísir reports. Only Icelandic and American companies may bid on the project, which is expected to cost the United States Department of Defense USD 17.1 million.

The US Navy intends to station P-8 Poseidon jets in Iceland in response to increased Russian submarine activity in the North Atlantic. The jets specialise in locating submarines.

In order to be able to service the aircraft in Iceland, existing hangars need to be refurbished. The renovations include replacing the doors on Hangar 831 and the construction of an automatic washing station.

The US Department of Defense expects to spend USD 12.8 million refurbishing the hangar and 4.3 million building the washing station.
