US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs in Iceland

US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs R. Nicholas Burns will visit Iceland tomorrow at the invitation of Foreign Minister Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir to participate in a high-level security dialogue.

The dialogue is outlined in the 2006 Joint Understanding between the United States and Iceland, as described in a press release from the US Embassy in Iceland.

Burns will discuss the current international strategic environment and will review developments in US-Icelandic security cooperation with Icelandic officials.

The Under Secretary will also meet with Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde and receive a tour of the Alþingi Parliament Building from President of Alþingi, Sturla Bödvarsson.

In his two years as Under Secretary, the most senior Foreign Service position in the Department of State, Burns has been the Department’s point man on critical global issues, including Iran’s nuclear program, the future of Kosovo, and transatlantic cooperation in the war on terror.
