Established US travel agency Tauck, which celebrates its 85th anniversary next year and offers cruises all around the world, has added Iceland to its destinations and the luxury yacht Le Boreal will circle the country in July 2010.
“We are always looking for new destinations and many of our customers have expressed their interest in sailing around Iceland,” Tom Armstrong, Tauck’s information officer, told Fréttabladid.
Le Boreal is a 466-feet luxury yacht and can facilitate 264 travelers and a crew of 140. Almost all of the apartments on board have their own balcony and there is also a swimming pool, French restaurant, cinema and gym on board.
The travelers fly to Iceland and spend the first night at the Reykjavík Hilton Nordica. The cruise begins the next day and destinations include the Snaefellsnes peninsula, Grímsey island, Akureyri, the West Fjords and the Westman Islands.
“I have never heard of such a tour before, that people sail around the country in a yacht,” said managing director of the Icelandic Travel Industry Association Erna Hauksdóttir. “However, it is becoming more common that passenger ships stop at more than one location during their travels to the country, which is very positive.”
Hauksdóttir said that the number of large passenger ships that visit Iceland increases every year; this year more than 80 cruisers docked in Iceland.
