US and Iceland to discuss defense issues today

Morgunbladid reported this morning that US and Icelandic delegations were scheduled to meet at 930 am today to discuss defense issues.

This is the first official meeting between the two parties since the US notified Iceland earlier this month that it would withdraw the bulk of its forces from Iceland by September.

US deputy secretary of state Nicholas Burns said in an article published in Morgunbladid today: “We Americans will continue to fulfill our duty to protect Iceland according to the defense agreement of 1951.”
