Ups and Downs for Iceland at Handball World Cup

icelandicflagThe Icelandic national team in women’s handball is currently competing at the world championships for the first time. They won their first game against Montenegro at the World Cup in Brazil on Saturday but lost yesterday’s game against Angola.

Of the two opponents, Montenegro was considered to be the stronger team; they placed sixth at the European Championship last year, Morgunblaðið reports. The game was even throughout and Iceland ended up winning by one goal, 22-21.

Iceland’s defenses and attacks were not as strong against Angola, which took the lead early on in the game and ended up beating Iceland by four goals, 28-24.

Iceland’s next game is against Norway tomorrow. The team needs to win points either in that game or in the following game against Germany to qualify for the 16-team playoffs.
