Three Dutchmen had been hiking in the uninhabited areas of Hornstrandir and Jökulfirdir since last week, only returning last night, according to mbl.is. The people stayed for example for a long time at Hornvík, which is very close to Hlöduvík, where, last Monday, a polar bear was spotted and shot.
The people were not reachable by telephone. They had already left Hornvík when the polar bear was first sighted.
The crew of a small boat spotted the polar bear at Haelavík. The female animal was looking well and physically fit. By the time that the Coast Guard helicopter carrying shooters, arrived, it had moved to Rekavík, an adjacent cove.
