The month of April was unusually warm in Iceland, according to the Icelandic Met Office.
At 4.9ºC (40.82ºF) the average temperature in Reykjavík was 2ºC (35.6ºF) above the average temperature for April from 1961 to 1990 and 1ºC (33.8ºF) above the average temperature for April over the last ten years, ruv.is reports.
The average temperature in Akureyri, North Iceland, last month was 3.6ºC, also 2ºC above the average temperature from 1961 to 1990.
The warmest temperature last month was in Skaftafell, Southeast Iceland, on April 22 when the mercury rose to 18.1ºC (64.58ºF) whereas the coldest temperature was -14.8ºC (5.36ºF) in Setur, the south-central highlands, on April 17.
The temperature in Iceland during the first four months of the year has only been warmer three times since records began in 1871.
