Unusually Good Skiing Conditions in Iceland

About 2,000 skiers and snowboarders hit the slopes of Mt. Bláfjöll, the ski resort outside Reykjavík, on Saturday. There is still plenty of snow in the mountains and these skiing conditions are unusual in southern Iceland for this time of year.

“There aren’t many years that the conditions have been this good. We have deep snow, sun, no wind and frost,” Einar Bjarnason, a staff member of the Mt. Bláfjöll ski resort, told Fréttabladid.

Although the slopes were crowded last weekend, Bjarnason said Mt. Bláfjöll can easily handle up to 5,000 skiers at once.

About 1,100 people visited the Mt. Hlídarfjall skiing area in Akureyri, northeast Iceland, on Saturday, where the teenage national skiing championship took place last weekend.

Most of the ski resorts in Iceland were open last weekend.
