Floor coverings are ruined and furniture and computers damaged in two auditoriums at the University of Iceland, after they were flooded by groundwater yesterday, RÚV reports. The flooding resulted from the malfunctioning of sump pumps in the building. Exams scheduled in the rooms had to be moved to a different location.
“The auditoriums were covered with nearly 30 cm (12 in) deep water,” remarked Vilhjálmur Pálmason, head of the Division of Operations and Resources at the university. He said the leakage was discovered around 6 pm last night in the basement of the Háskólatorg building.
Vilhjálmur’s first task was to call the fire department, which quickly brought equipment to pump out the water. “I’m sure they pumped out tens of thousands of liters from the two auditoriums,” he remarked.
He stated it’s not yet clear how extensive the damage is. All he knows is that the floor coverings are ruined, some furniture is damaged, as well as some computers.
