UNIFEM Iceland Fights Violence against Women

By Iceland Review

The Iceland branch of UNIFEM launched an initiative on Thursday entitled “Say NO to Violence against Women,” as part of an international UNIFEM project launched in New York in November last year in cooperation with goodwill ambassador for UNIFEM and Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman.

Visitors to unifem.is can register their names to a petition in support of the initiative until November 6. Then the petition will be sent to the headquarters of UNIFEM in New York where the global initiative will finish on November 25, 24 Stundir reports.

Iceland’s Foreign Minister Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir, Minister of Health Gudlaugur Thór Thórdarson and Minister of Transport Kristján Möller attended the launch of the initiative yesterday.

“It’s a given that I participate in this initiative; I despise violence,” Gísladóttir said. “Since I first started out in politics I have always been convinced that if anything is of importance then that is improving the rights of women. It is not only important for women but also for the community as a whole.”

The foreign minister encourages everyone to support UNIFEM’s cause.

Regína Bjarnadóttir, the chairman of the board of UNIFEM in Iceland, said fighting violence against women is not something that can wait. “At least one out of every three women is beaten, forced to sexual intercourse or abused in other ways at some point in her life.”
