The unemployment rate in the Suðurnes region, Southwest Iceland, has decreased by 45 percent in the last six months. The number of unemployed persons at the end of June totaled 240, down from 436 in December 2012, according to vf.is.

Trade unions, Confederation of Icelandic Employers (SA) and the Directorate of Labor have worked to promote employment opportunities in the region.
According to the latest data from Statistics Iceland, the nationwide unemployment rate in May was 7.4 percent, down 1.6 percentage points from May 2012.
