The unemployment situation usually improves in June and July due to seasonal fluctuations. In June and July 2009 the jobless rate dropped as well, from 8.0 and 8.1 percent, respectively, from 8.7 percent in May, ruv.is reports.

However, as Karl Sigurdsson, divisional manager at the Directorate of Labor, told Morgunbladid, the unemployment rate is also lower than expected because of an initiative to create employment and more people moving abroad.

Last month unemployment among men was 7.7 percent and 7.3 percent among women. The unemployment rate is highest in the Sudurnes region in southwest Iceland at 11.9 percent and lowest in northwest Iceland at 2.6 percent.
