Two Serious Accidents Yesterday

Two serious accidents occurred on Reykjanes peninsula, Southwest Iceland, yesterday, one of them fatal. The first accident occurred on Grindavíkurvegur road. An Icelandic woman in her forties was traveling alone on her way to Grindavík, when she appears to have lost control of the vehicle, which rolled over and landed off the road, according to RÚV.

Passers-by discovered the car and the woman’s body at about 2 am yesterday morning. The Suðurnes Police Department is investigating the cause of the accident.

This is the second fatal accident to occur on Grindavíkurvegur road this year. On January 12, and 18-year-old female died when her car skidded on ice to the wrong side of the road and collided with another vehicle.

Minister of Transport and Local Government Jón Gunnarsson has promised improvements of the Grindavíkurvegur road. He is scheduled to meet with Grindavík’s local government on March 15, which intends to meet with the director of the Icelandic Road Administration this Thursday.

The second accident occurred last night on Reykjanesbraut, near the aluminum smelter in Straumsvík, where two vehicles collided, according to RÚV. The accident was reported at 8:20 pm. Four people were transported to Landspítali National University Hospital. No information is available regarding their condition. Reykjanesbraut remained closed while police worked on the scene but reopened by 10:30 pm last night.

The accident occurred close to where a fatal accident took place on February 21.

UPDATE: According to mbl.is, three if those involved in yesterday’s accident near Straumsvík are seriously injured, all of them foreign tourists.
