Ambulances from Blönduós and Hvammstangi were sent to the scene but the paramedics determined that the condition of the injured was so severe that they had to be sent by Coast Guard helicopter to Landspítali, the national hospital, visir.is and ruv.is report.
The car the injured were driving ran off the road. People from another car came to their assistance and towed the car back onto the side of the road.
Another car approached, which was passing a vehicle, hit the man and the woman who were standing beside their car, and landed off road. Road conditions were very slippery. The other people on the scene managed to avoid being hit by the car.
The events are described a bit differently on ruv.is. The story says that the driver of the car stepped abruptly on the breaks when the car in front ran off the road.
The driver of the third car tried to avoid a collision with the stopped car stopped but slid off the road and accidently hit the man who was helping to tow the first car back onto the road. Another person in the crowd was also hit.
The road in Vídidalur was closed for some time because of the accident.
According to information from the Road Administration, conditions are still icy all over the country and commuters are asked to drive carefully, mbl.is reports.
