Reykjavík city council agreed last week to move forward with the creation of two geothermal beaches, RÚV reports.
Reykjavík currently has one geothermal beach, located at Nauthólsvík, where excess hot water from a geothermal power station is pumped into a man-made lagoon. The beach has changing facilities and showers, as well as steam baths and hot tubs.
The two new beaches will be located at Gufunes and Skarfaklettur in east Reykjavík. A budget and operational plan for the project is expected to be completed by 1 October. Public Utility Company Veitur estimates the cost of implementing the beaches will be ISK 180 million (USD 1.8m/EUR 1.5m).
