Two NATO Jets, 120 Personnel at Keflavík Airport for Exercises

Two F-15 fighter jets and 120 NATO personnel arrived in the country today to conduct NATO air surveillance and routine exercises, Vísir reports.

Ásgeir Erlendsson, spokesperson for the Icelandic Coast Guard, stated that two additional fighter jets are expected to arrive soon for exercises are planned at the Akureyri and Egilsstaðir airfields in the coming days.

The squadron is based at Keflavík International Airport. The Icelandic Coast Guard is overseeing the visit, in collaboration with airport operator Isavia. The exercises are expected to conclude at the end of June.

Recent inclement weather has however raised the possibility that the exercises may be delayed.

When asked about possible delays, Ásgeir stated that no decision had yet been reached.

Weather alerts are currently active for all of Iceland, with Yellow weather warnings over Southwest, West, and Northwest Iceland. Orange weather alerts, which are more severe, are in effect over the rest of the country.
