Two men drown off Westfjords

Two fishermen were killed when a ten-ton open motorboat sank by the mouth of the fjord Ísafjardardjúp at midnight last night. Emergency services believe the boat overturned due to bad weather.

The weather in Ísafjardardjúp began worsening severely after dinner last night. Most smaller boats sailed back to shore immediately, but the boat that sank was still out at sea at 10 pm, ruv.is reports.

At 10 pm, contact broke and emergency services were called to search for the boat. It was found shortly after midnight, upside down and half submerged. There was no sign of the two-man crew.

The fishermen were discovered one and two hours later, respectively, about a mile away from the boat. Both drowned.
