Two Icelandic men in their thirties have been sentenced to custody after trying to smuggle illegal substances in suitcases to Iceland earlier this week. Although the men were arrested on separate occasions, police believe their cases are related.
One of the men arrived in Iceland on Tuesday and was arrested at Keflavík International Airport. He was carrying a suitcase containing one and a half kilo of a white substance, presumable a strong narcotic, Fréttabladid reports.
The other man was arrested on Wednesday when he went to pick up his household inventory that had been sent to Iceland in a container. Among his things was a suitcase containing a white substance, a smaller amount than confiscated the day before.
The investigation is in the initial stages.
In other drug-related news, almost 70 individuals have been arrested and a high amount of drugs has been confiscated in a special initiative to fight drugs launched by police in north Iceland in fall 2008. About 20 of those arrested are believed to be drug-traffickers.
