Around 200 tourists are currently in the northern part of Vatnajökull National Park in the area which would need to be evacuated in case of an eruption in Bárðarbunga volcano, which would trigger a glacial flood in Jökulsá á Fjöllum.
Fifty-four people are currently in Ásbyrgi canyon, 25 in Vesturdalur, 79 in Drekagil, 3 in Dyngja and 30 in the mountain range Kverkfjöll.
Hjörleifur Finnsson, a park ranger in the area, told mbl.is that it would be best if the evacuation warning came during the night when people were located in or around the cabins. If the evacuation announcement comes during the day, however, it could take up to four hours to search the hiking routes.
A Code Orange was issued yesterday in light of increased likelihood of an eruption in Bárðarbunga after continued earthquakes in the area.
