Two Fox Hunters Found Dead in Iceland’s Highlands

Two men, in their fifties and eighties, were found dead in a cottage on Audkúluheidi heath near Blöndulón dam in the northern highland yesterday. The men had gone fox hunting on Tuesday afternoon. Police in Akureyri are investigating their deaths.

According to the investigative department of the Akureyri police, the men may have died from gas poisoning, Morgunbladid reports.

When the fox hunters did not return home yesterday morning as they had planned, one of their sons began looking for them. He found their bodies in the cottage at noon.

There is a gas heater in the cottage and it appears to have leaked. The cottage, which was renovated recently, is very small and air circulation was poor. In such a small space, it does not take long for the gas to cause lack of oxygen.

The elder man had hunted foxes every winter since 1940 and the younger of the two had accompanied him for several years.
