A man and a woman who planned to be the first to cross Faxaflói Bay, southwest Iceland, on kayaks have been missing since Saturday morning. About 15 emergency service teams and the Icelandic Coast guard are looking for the couple.
The tourists are experienced kayakers and had prepared well. They sailed out from Gardskagi, a spit of land on Reykjanes peninsula on Saturday morning and planned to arrive on Snaefellsnes peninsula on Saturday night or Sunday morning, Morgunbladid reports.
As the kayakers did not make it to Snaefellsnes, emergency services were called out. Search teams sailed along the coastline and a ship sailed the same route as the couple had planned to paddle. The Coast Guard’s helicopter searched from the air. The weather was clear apart from light fog on Faxaflói.
Police ask anyone who has noticed the two kayakers to contact emergency services by calling 112.
