Two Fires Overnight

Fire erupted at Grillskálinn restaurant at the N1 gas station in the village of Þórshöfn, Northeast Iceland, just before 4 o’clock this morning, reports. No one was injured, but the building, a wooden structure, is in ruins.

Construction was underway by the building. As part of the project, oil tanks were being replaced. The 12 local fire fighters put themselves in grave danger when removing a 5,000-10,000 liter (1,300-2,600 gallon) oil tank, which was fastened to the burning building. Numerous gas tanks were also removed.

Some tanks were already exploding when fire fighters arrived on the scene. Local rescue workers took part in battling the fire, RÚV reports.A thick cloud of black smoke covered the village while the fire burned. You can see pictures of the fire here.

Meanwhile, in Reykjavík, fire fighters were called out after 4 o’clock this morning. Fire had erupted in a basement apartment on Miklabraut . The two men, who were in the apartment when the fire started, managed to get out. No one was hurt.
