Two-Day Fishermen’s Festival in Akureyri

As in Reykjavík, the Fishermen’s Day—which is always held on the first Sunday in June—in Akureyri has evolved into a two-day festival. It will kick off tomorrow with a family program at the outdoor recreational area Hamrar, which starts with a football tournament at 1 pm.

Then the festival will be officially launched by actress Jana María Gudmundsdóttir. Fairytale characters Miki the Fox and Lilli the Climbing Mouse will entertain the kids along with other funny people, there will be various contests and an airplane will scatter caramels over the festival ground, a press release promises.

Both tomorrow and Sunday, the actual Fishermen’s Day, there will be a program by the harbor, including a sailing trip with Húni II at 4 pm on Saturday and a rowing competition at 3 pm on Sunday.

A formal celebration will take place at and around the culture center Hof, starting at 2 pm on Sunday with speeches and the presenting of awards.
