Two Cubans, Father and Son, Flee Iceland because of Racial Persecutions

A man is in police custody, suspected of having persecuted a Reykjavík family of Cuban origin. Yesterday a seventeen year old man was also taken in, but he was released. According to reports on RÚV, somebody attacked the home of the family on Saturday night, breaking windows and damaging the door.

The son, who is 17, has been the victim of abuse, possibly because he has been going out with a girl of Icelandic origin. The family has also been threatened in various other ways.

The family has lived in Iceland for about a decade. The father is a physical therapist and the son is active in sports. The father and son are both Icelandic citizens.

The suspect was arraigned yesterday.

The father and son left the country yesterday because they feared for their safety. Police escorted them to the airport.
