Twenty-five richest Icelanders own ISK 1,390 billion

The pure assets of the 25 richest Icelanders are worth about ISK 1,390 billion (USD 22 billion, EUR 17 billion), 16 times the amount spent on healthcare in Iceland last year. Björgólfur Thor Björgólfsson is on top of the list and is probably among the 160 richest people in the world.

Earlier this year, Björgólfsson was listed in business magazine Forbes as the 249th richest person in the world, but has earned considerable amounts since then, Fréttabladid reports.

Everyone on the list has assets worth at least ISK 20 billion (USD 321 million, EUR 239 million) debt free.

There are five women on the list, two pairs of fathers and sons and two pairs of brothers. The youngest person on the list is Baugur CEO Jón Ásgeir Jóhannesson, who is 39.

Most people on the list are involved in investments in foreign markets, but three of the 25 richest Icelanders, Thorsteinn Már Baldursson and Kristján Vilhelmsson at sea food company Samherji and Gudmundur Kristjánsson at sea food company Brim made their fortune from the sea.
