Twenty Containers Fall into Ocean

Twenty containers, which were being transported by Eimskip vessel Dettifoss en route to Iceland, fell into the ocean 85 nautical miles northwest of the Faroe Islands last night when the ship was hit by rogue waves.

The company’s information officer Ólafur Hand told ruv.is that never before have so many containers fallen from one of its transport vessel before. It’s clear that this has led to significant financial damage for the parties involved.

Dettifoss was originally destined for Reyðarfjörður in the East Fjords but due to unfavorable weather conditions, it was decided to send the ship to Reykjavík instead. It’s expected to arrive at the harbor at 8 pm.
